THE
ROYAL SOCIETY OF BRITISH ARTISTS EXHIBITION - May 2008
Stephen Rawlings painted a triptych of himself, his father
and his grandfather for his A level art portfolio whilst a
pupil at The Howard of Effingham School in Surrey. This was
seen at a Mole Valley NADFAS Young Arts Exhibition at Denbies
in 2006 and subsequently chosen to be hung at the Mall Galleries
in London in May 2008, with other A level art exhibits, during
the annual exhibition of The Royal Society of British Artists.
The original painting of 3 portraits was too big for the Exhibition
purposes and Stephen agreed to have just one portrait framed
and hung - that of his Grandfather. Stephen is currently completing
a foundation course in art at The Chelsea School of Art.

Limpsfield DFAS
Limpsfield organised an Art Competition
during 27 and 28 October. Nineteen
Primary Schools in their area participated and a donation was made
to each school for art materials. This was very much appreciated
by the art teaching staff and helped enormously with the schools
being able to participate in the competition.
The exhibition was a huge success due to the hard work and enthusiasm
of the Young Arts Representative, Wendy Moore, in managing to persuade
so many schools in the Limpsfield area to take part.

Project: Willow copse; sensory walk leading up to school
garden. Two-day themed project based on the topic of 3D.
Liz Meikle (YAAR) and Dorking DFAS' YA Representative visited
the school whilst the Willow Artist was helping the children build
the willow tunnel. The project was part of a fun packed arts
week. Eventually a flowerbed will be developed with plants
to attract bees and butterflies. We were shown round the whole
school where every classroom was involved in a variety of art projects.
We were very impressed with the children's enthusiasm at being
able to complete their designs during the course of the art week.

Project: Design and making of mosaic paving slabs
to create a path in the Quiet Garden. Workshops held in school
and all pupils to participate in designing mosaic slabs. The
school also hopes to make a mosaic birdbath.
Liz Meikle (YAAR) and the YA Rep from Walton-on-the-Hill DFAS visited
the school on their exhibition evening to view the mosaic path in
the Quiet Garden and to see the art displays around the school the.
The end result is very effective and gives the children a tranquil
area to sit in. The mosaic slabs reflect different aspects of nature
and insects. There are bird feeders in the trees and new shrubs
have been planted. The whole project has taken several months
with much support from the PTA.
Powell Corderoy Primary School, Dorking Surrey - linked

Powell Corderoy Schools PTA matched the grant from NADFAS and
along with other funding raised by the PTA the school planned an
activity fortnight linked to the National Gallery's 'Take
one Picture' scheme. The School chose the National Gallery's
painting by Peter Paul Rubens 'Autumn Landscape with
a view of Het Steen in the early morning'. The teachers
spent an Inset day at the National Gallery familiarising themselves
with the painting and gathering ideas for use with the children.
The children worked on art subjects relating to the painting in school,
making collages, sculpture, paintings, and drawings during the art
fortnight in the summer term. The whole school visited the
National Gallery to view the original Rubens' painting.
