The Area Coordinator for Education (ACE) organises Study
Days, Days of Special Interest and Tours, which provide the opportunity to look at subjects in more
depth than is often possible at a society lecture, encouraging discussion and
a chance to explore new ways of looking at art. The ACE also organises an annual
seminar for Programme Teams to meet and exchange ideas and experiences.
Please contact the Area Co-ordinator for Education on e-mail for
more information.
If you would like your name to be added to our e-contact list so that we can
keep you informed of East Surrey Area Events, please send your e-mail address

Study Morning at Denbies Estate, Dorking - Friday
21 November 2008
Tom Duncan - Islam and the Mosque
The development and spread of Islam, following the death of
the prophet Mohammed, led to the adoption of one particular
building type for all Muslims: the Mosque. The lectures will
concentrate on the earliest phase of this development. Beginning
with the life of the Prophet and the astonishing spread of
Islam after his death, the early monuments of Jerusalem and
Damascus will be examined. These were created for the first
great dynasty, the Unmayads. With their almost complete annihilation,
the remains of this dynasty relocated to North Africa from
where they took charge of the Muslim conquest of Spain. The
lectures will culminate in an examination of the great mosque
at Cordoba, a structure of simple design, though of hugely
complex and important decoration. All
places for this event are now taken. |

Study Morning and Buffet Lunch at Epsom Playhouse - Friday
26 September 2008
To celebrate the NADFAS 40th Anniversary David Bostwick and
Valerie Woodgate will be delivering two Lectures covering the
period from Tudor Times up to the Modern Day; all are welcome,
please bring your friends. Download a booking form here.
In the first lecture The Dissolution
of the Abbeys and our Cultural Heritage David Bostwick will look at medieval monastic
life and the growth of abbeys through the middle ages until
their dissolution in the time of Henry VIII when their assets
were seized and redistributed, which led to the building of
great houses such as Nonsuch Palace and which ushered in the
new Renaissance ideas.
In the second lecture Looking at Portraits – A
Very English Taste Valerie Woodgate will talk about portraiture after the
Reformation when most of the major painters working in England
were foreigners such as Holbein and Van Dyck. She will move
on to the 18th Century when Reynolds and Gainsborough came
to prominence and then to the present day when artists such
as Lucien Freud continue to explore and expand the subject. |
