Saturday 12 December 2009 - a Group of 60
members and non-members attended John Rutter’s Christmas
Celebration concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at
the Royal Albert Hall.
Double Lecture Morning at Dorking Halls – Friday,
6 November
Politics and Society in Georgian England : Oliver Everett and
Linda Smith. In a departure from the usual format, members
were offered tickets with an opportunity to bring a guest without
charge. Guests, including waiting list and non-members were
able to share a very interesting and entertaining morning.
The lectures covering different aspects of 18c Georgian England
were presented by two very popular NADFAS lecturers.
London Walk – Saturday,
12 September
Andrew Davies conducted a guided walk, discovering a forgotten
part of London - ‘The Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens and the
River Thames’.
The Programme for the first half of 2009 featured
a Japanese theme.
On Friday, 6 March in ‘Staging the Orient’ Sarah
Lenton presented an overview of Japanese theatre and
opera, showing how the Orient is represented on the European
Stage with specific reference to Madame Butterfly and
The Mikado.
On Friday 1 May in her lectures on ‘Japanese
Art and Culture’, Suzanne Perrin covered
Japanese living traditions including religion ,crafts,
and festivals with a detailed look at Japanese costume
and textiles from the 10th century to the present
day.
These were followed by a Tour to Japan -

Concerts at the Royal Festival Hall
Following the enthusiastic response to the group bookings
in 2008, we again reserved discounted places for concerts
by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on: 18 March, 27 April
and 24 May.

In Looking at Portraits – A Very English Taste Valerie
Woodgate talked about portraiture after the Reformation up
to the present day when artists such as Lucien Freud continue
to explore and expand the subject.
Concerts at the The Royal Festival Hall
Following the major refurbishment of the Royal Festival
Hall building in the design context of the original 1951
vision, we obtained group-discounted tickets for four concerts
by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra so that members could
see the restored building “in action”. These
proved so popular that we hope to organise more concert tickets
next year.
